Biography
In 2017, Alasdair joined DAC Beachcroft and progressed his specialism in a wide range of regulatory casework involving compliance investigations, corporate prosecutions, Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI), and public inquiry proceedings.
Alasdair advises upon non-contentious matters in relation to cyber security compliance, due diligence advisory work in corporate transactions, environmental permits under the Controlled Water Activities (CAR), and authorisations under Pollution Prevention and Control legislation. He regularly advises and represents insurer clients, corporate organisations, and individuals in the defence of cases following investigations carried out by industry regulators such as Police Scotland, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Financial Conduct Authority, Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), and Environmental Health Departments.
Alasdair acts for clients from the initial point of a serious or fatal incident through to management of regulators, the investigation process, all the way to legal representation at court. Alasdair is the Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) legal point of contact in Scotland for a national housebuilder company, a global glass products manufacturer, and two UK wide care service providers. He has successfully challenged and appealed enforcement notices and measures served by regulators such as the HSE and SEPA, as well as successfully querying HSE Fee For Intervention (FFI) invoices imposed on organisations and assisting clients through Dispute tribunals.
He regularly delivers behavioural safety and incident response training workshops and mock trial sessions to corporate clients across a variety of sectors, tailoring training packages to all levels including boards of directors, senior management, and workers on the impact of regulatory investigations, crisis management, and subsequent prosecutions.
Alasdair is a member of the Health and Safety Lawyers' Association, and regularly contributes to and publishes various articles covering regulatory and compliance law, and has been published by the Business Law Review.

Alasdair's relevant experience includes:
- Acting for a global integrated wood products manufacturer following a workplace fatality.
- Advising throughout a substantial HSE investigation and providing representation at the longest running health and safety criminal trial in Scottish legal history.
- Advising a national construction client following a serious work at height incident on a construction site, including advising on compliance with CDM 2015 duties and management responsibilities of contractors. Alasdair successfully persuaded the HSE to take no enforcement action, matter disposed by way of warning letter.
- Representing a national haulage and transport company at an Office of the Traffic Commissioner's public inquiry, successfully persuading the Traffic Commissioner from revoking the haulage operator's licence and trailer entitlement.
- Advising a care service provider in relation to a serious health and safety investigation and concurrent Large Scale Investigation (LSI) proceedings involving the care review and service delivery of a specialist neurological care home centre. He successfully persuaded the prosecution to take no further proceedings.
- Representing an employee of a national food manufacturer in relation to an environmental health investigation of the regional outbreak of a contagious disease infecting numerous members of the public. Criminal proceedings were successfully discontinued.
- Acting for a global manufacturer, collaborating as part of an in-house multi-practice due diligence team in respect to delivering a regulatory and compliance audit and due diligence report. This was conducted in relation to a target corporate entity as part of the commercial transaction’s Sales and Purchase Agreement framework.
- Acting for a marine engineering director following an investigation by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Marine Accident Investigation Branch into the fatality of a crew member of a commercial vessel. Prosecutorial proceedings were discontinued and the matter subsequently dealt with by way of FAI.
- Advising and reviewing a care service client’s involvement in a local authority's health and social care partnership’s Serious Case Review (SCR) Panel proceedings regarding the death of a vulnerable adult with highly complex care needs. SCR proceedings concluded with no adverse comment or findings raised against the care provider.
- Advising and representing the construction joint venture entity responsible for the infrastructure development and construction of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR). Alasdair advised on environmental permit compliance and the application of SEPA’s enforcement measures.
