Seamus has expertise and specialised knowledge in civil litigation. His practice focuses on personal injury, employer's liability, and motor claims (including credit hire). Seamus has significant experience in all aspects of costs advocacy, particularly in complex multi-track clinical negligence matters, high value personal injury cases, and commercial disputes. This gives him a unique perspective on the commercial realities of costs recovery and exposure.

Since 2014 Seamus has appeared regularly in County Courts, High Court District Registries, the SCCO, and RCJ. He has undertaken instructions on all levels of interim and final hearings for both claimant and defendant clients, including settlement hearings and mediations, and is a qualified mediator.

Seamus has a special aptitude for trial advocacy and is experienced in drafting advice on quantum and other court documents. He is well regarded for his attention to detail and meticulous preparation and adopts a pragmatic approach whilst always stiving for the best outcomes for his clients.

Seamus is an experienced trainer, delivering training to an array of prestigious organisations, including Law Societies, the North East Circuit, and SCIL. In addition to his practical experience, Seamus is a member of the BSB Standard Setting team (ethics). He also teaches and assesses advocacy for the Association of Cost Lawyers.

    Seamus's relevant experience includes:

    • XL-v- Z: Successfully representing the defendant at trial in a road traffic accident where the claimant alleged that the Defendant’s insured had caused the accident by making an unexpected manoeuvre. Liability offers had been made to settle however the defendant insured was adamant the accident was not their fault. Following thorough cross-examination, the court struck out the C's claim and ordered that they pay the defendant’s costs.
    • BS -v- JK: Defending a road traffic accident involving a collision at a roundabout and featuring conflicting evidence. Despite the claimant being supported by an additional witness, Seamus was able to have the claim struck out and the claimant had to pay the defendant's costs.
    • AH -v- RSA: Securing favourable directions at a complex CCMC and managed to reduce the claimant's budgeted costs by over 60%, representing a significant saving.
